Rat Model of Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy ( rAION) ( PreClinical Study)

Non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAAION) is a condition where the vessels supplying blood to the optic nerve become blocked leading to loss of oxygen supply to the optic nerve and finally its damage. Damage to the optic nerve can lead to irreversible vision loss due to damage on the neural tissue. Retinal cell survival is now possible when supplemented with Eyetas dietary supplements. EYETAS has proved to improve vision and protect retinal cells, through its neuroprotective effects. Anti-inflammatory response with Omega 3 supplementation is evident at a cellular level.

Animals with anterior ischemic optic neuropathy were orally supplemented with omega-3 PUFAs (400 mg EPA and 100 mg DHA) once daily for 14 days. Treatment demostrated protection of the RGCs and improvement of the flash visual-evoked potentials ( FVEPs). Possible mechanistic actions of the omega-3 PUFAs in rAION include, anti-apoptotic effects and decreased inflammatory markers.

Our findings analyzed herein suggest that the administration of EYETAS has a neuroprotective effect in rAION, as evidenced by both RGC morphometry and visual functional preservation. Treatment with EYETAS preserved the survival of RGCs by reducing the apoptotic RGCs post infarct. In addition, EYETAS supplementation preserved the visual function, as evidenced by FVEP.

Serum levels of eicosapentaenoic acid are associated with a significantly lower risk of choroidal neovascular AMD in a study of 290 patients with wet AMD and 144 controls without AMD. The red blood cell membrane levels of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexanoic fatty acids, which represent long-term levels of PUFAs, are associated strongly with a lower risk for choroidal neovascular AMD.

In a recent cross-sectional case-controlled study, neovascular AMD was associated with lower circulatory levels of Omega 3 and higher levels of Omega-6 fatty acids.

Omega-3 reduce choroidal neovascular AMD in a mouse model. The levels of VEGF and leukocytes infiltration were also reduced in the retina and choroid in the Omega 3 fed mouse model.
