Serum levels of eicosapentaenoic acid are associated with a significantly lower risk of choroidal neovascular AMD in a study of 290 patients with wet AMD and 144 controls without AMD. The red blood cell membrane levels of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexanoic fatty acids, which represent long-term levels of PUFAs, are associated strongly with a lower risk for choroidal neovascular AMD.

In a recent cross-sectional case-controlled study, neovascular AMD was associated with lower circulatory levels of Omega 3 and higher levels of Omega-6 fatty acids.
